Sturmovik 1946

Cooperative Marathon

In this marathon we fly 43 Red side Coop missions and 41 Blue side missions which makes a total of 84 Coop missions. Our goal is to win every mission with the exception of 10 faulty missions that have Full Mission Builder design errors preventing RED WON or BLUE WON (or both) texts from ever appearing!

In the above mentioned faulty missions our goal is to get some visible scores for endscreen and also make notes about what is wrong in the mission design to fix and offer corrected versions of faulty missions for download and hopefully even include them in future game patches of IL-2 Sturmovik 1946.

EDIT CONF.INI

Not all values can be changed in-game, but even the IL-2 manual encourages to change them by editing a settings file called conf.ini. After I had set maximum settings in-game, I chose these values to tune the game to look a little nicer and to have some more special functions. There are many more settings, but in my opinion they were not worth changing. If you're interested to know more about them, see this knowledgebase.

Before you start, make a copy of your conf.ini since there is no 'reset to default settings' button anywhere. Then open conf.ini with your Notepad to edit and save these values.

[window]

width=1680 or your Windows widescreen resolution width
Change this ONLY if you have widescreen display.
height=1050 or your Windows widescreen resolution height
Change this ONLY if if you have widescreen display.
ChangeScreenRes=0
Change this from 1 to 0 if you have widescreen display. ChangeScreenRes Changes the whole screen resolution to match what it reads in conf.ini, and of course, setting ChangeScreenRes=0 will make IL2 simply display what conf.ini tells it to display, ignoring the Windows desktop resolution.
SaveAspect=0
Change this from 1 to 0 if you have widescreen display. No matter what display or settings you have, IL-2 never adds field of view horizontally and with widescreen picture zooms in limiting top and bottom field of view. However if you have widecreen display with pivot function, it can be rotated to up to portrait position and picture expands field of view vertically to show more down from the pedals up to the canopy. In theory, how much this is expanded depends on widescreen displays maximum resolution.With SaveAspect=0 only game menus will have black bars on sides and when playing they are gone. BTW. Combination of wide view (Page Down-key) and Toggle Gun sight (Shift+F1 keys) gives nice results on widescreen displays according to users of widescreen displays.

After changing above values do not use il2setup.exe or go to Hardware Setup->Video Modes because they both reset all these settings.

[Game]

HighGore=1
Enables dead pilots and some blood for some planes like older IL-2 series planes. This feature has been disabled in recent versions of the game, maybe just to lower player age restrictions, worth trying anyway.
3dgunners=1
Adds visible gunners to the flak guns, ship guns etc. for Pacific Fighers side missions. Will effect frame rate.
Eventlogkeep=1
When 0 it logs newest mission only. When 1 it logs all missions to one long list.
TypeClouds=1
Improved quality clouds. This line has to be added manually. When playing online, players will see the cloud type set by the server, and not the type they have in their own conf.ini files. This is done to ensure all players see the same tactical situation in the air regardless of their settings.

[MaxLag]

cheaterWarningNum=-1
When -1 cheater autokick is off. When 1 cheater autokick is on.

[NET]

checkRuntime=1
In v4.08 The server can now check for changes on the client-side game modules, i.e. ensure the modules were not modified. When 1, a quick check is done. When 2, a comprehensive check is done, but if host and client have different OS versions, it may identifty the OS differences as changes in game modules, so I decided to not use this higher value.

[chat]

autoLogDetail=3
Shows maximum amount of kill messages and a lot of chit-chatting in the log file.

[HookView Config]

MaxLen=50000.0
Maximum distance (in meters) how far you can move your deathcam. Default is only 3000 (3km) so you usually can't scroll your deathcam near the action because it's too far away. I prefer setting this to 50000 (50km) or more if possible.

[Console]

LOG=1
Logging on or off. I enabled this to see if there are any errors in conf.ini - for example values set beyond their limits.
LOGKEEP=1
When 0 it logs the newest activity only. When 1 it logs all activity to one long list.

[Render_OpenGL]

Forest=3
High-resolution trees in towns, requires Landscape Detail set to Perfect.
Water=4
Perfect water, cloud and wavy ground reflections, weather-dependant wave types, use with Nvidia 6800 or later with Vertex Shaders 3.0. (See ReadMe_408m.rtf for more details on this.)
Effects=2
Smoother smoke and longer fire burning time, use with 3GHz+ CPU and Nvidia GeForce 4/5600 or ATI 9700 or better.

JOYSTICKS

If you find controlling your aircraft too hard (especially in take off), try to enter these values recommended in the manual by game makers for most of the modern joysticks.

Pitch:
0 5 10 17 25 33 43 54 71 100
Roll:
0 3 7 15 25 35 50 66 84 100
Yaw:
0 8 19 29 39 51 62 75 86 100

Hanzu recommends getting a forcefeedback joystick with a stick twist for rudder. With forcefeedback it's possible to feel bumps in the ground if you steer your aircraft off the airfield. It's also possible to feel when your plane is about to stall and prevent that from happening. Without forcefeedback it's much harder to know when your plane is about to stall. It's also very handy to have a joystick where twisting stick left and right with your wrist controls rudder movement. It's even better to have separate pedals for controlling the rudder, tho.

Here are some forcefeedback joysticks with rudder twist:

TRACKIR

IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 and lots of other aviation and racing games support a device called TrackIR. Check out what it is here: http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/

Why we chose not to turn No Icons Off and have full realism? Our experiences with IL-2 Sturmovik (original) made us feel that this feature is not a real sign of realism. Also this note from IL-Sturmovik 1946 manual supports that:

No Icons: If this option is deselected, each object in the air bears a special icon. Icons make an object much more noticeable and indicate the nationality of the object by color. In addition, a special inscription on the icon indicates the type of aircraft and its distance from you.Strictly speaking, one cannot call it entirely unrealistic. Our ability to perceive our actual environment far surpasses our ability to perceive its virtual analogue in terms of resolution and the field of vision, even if all other conditions are similar. However, in real life, there are no icons on targets, and you can deselect the option if you feel like it.

There are missions where you have to shoot down two enemy planes with certain markings before they reach certain airspace. With No Icons this would be close to impossible. We also believe that real pilots had better aircraft identification skill and better understanding if an aircraft in a certain area is friendly or enemy. This understanding would be the result of briefings, radio communication and lots of other things.
