COMPATIBILITY WITH WINDOWS XP

For unknown reason CBEL works with some computers and with some it always crashes after start videos. It worked without any tinkering on my desktop and laptop computers which only had Windows XP Professional SP2, DirectX 9.0c and Intel processors as common parts. If CBEL works with your computer without any tricks, I still recommend setting Windows 95 compatibility mode permanently for Comandos.exe and mpserver.exe icons to make game a little more stable.

Version Differences

Q. What is the difference between the European and US versions of the game? How can I tell my version?

A. The European version was released in June. This is the 1.0 version of the game. The box is smaller than the US version. There are few copies in the US. The CD has an image of the whole Commando team. The US version is 1.1. It is an updated version. All known bugs in 1.0 are fixed. We have added several new features (including Mplayer functionality). This US version is available Sept 1st.

European customers can update their version to 1.1 via patches available on the UK EIDOS WEBSITE.
The European version 1.0 was released first. Box cover  shows Green Beret aiming with a pistol with some explosions in the background. CD has no autorun files.

The US version 1.1 (also called as North American version 1.1) was released about 2 months after European version. Box cover is dark and shows Green Beret with a knife and a german s. The US version has NOISY/SILENT MOTHER NATURE setting in OPTIONS and  in multiplayer chat backspace is not working. Not all known bugs are fixed for example chat backspace bug. CD includes autorun files. This version can not be updated with any patches.

Sold Out re-release is an European version with included 1.1 patch. Box shows orginal European version cover with Sold Out frame. The Sold Out re-release version has no NOISY/SILENT MOTHER NATURE setting in OPTIONS and  in multiplayer chat backspace is working. CD includes autorun files. This version patches itself during installation.

Q. What is the Server Ping limitation?  How do I set it?

A. This is our attempt to prevent high latency games.  It stipulates that clients cannot join the game with a ping (connection speed) higher than 300ms.  Creating a shortcut for the mpserver.exe (in game folder) and then changing the shortcut command line properties to mpserver.exe –vXXX (where XXX is the desired ping) can change this.

NOTE. Space between ping and XXX is crucial or this option will not have any effect.

You are able to customize the ping filter at the command line.  To do so, run the dedicated server executable with the command line argument -ping (# of ms).  For example, "mpserver.exe -ping 200" will set the maximum ping to 200ms.

    * Send messages to specific players. To use this feature, type in the number of the Commando with a space after the number, and then type in the message. For example, if you type "1 Shoot the barrel", the message will be sent to the player controlling Tiny, the Green Beret.
*Sold Out re-release version 1.1 seems to have chat window of 6 visible text rows and as high as backpack icon. US version 1.1 seems to have chat window of 2 visible text rows and as high as 50% of the height of a backpack icon. Conclusion is that only US version 1.1 has reduced Window size by 50% (But amazingly ignored BACKSPACE KEY not working bug. I suspect different programmers have made US version 1.1 fixes and European version patch 1.1 and they have not done much effort to syncronize these two revisions of version 1.1 to have all same changes. Shame on them!)

A. No, Clients ONLY need to complete a FULL INSTALL of the Commandos game (1.1 feature).

Rank for Mission 20 access

If user does not obtain rank of Captain by the end of mission 19, he will not be allowed to play mission 20.

If this is the case, he will see the rank screen with NO Next Mission option.  He will only have option PLAY AGAIN.  If this happens, replay from an earlier save and work to get that  rank.

This was implemented as a way to drive users to succeed, and to reward those users whom are skillful at play.
In US version 1.1 mission 20 is always available.

Server limitation for High Latency User (Ping)

When the user connects to the server, server will ping user, if ping is greater than 300ms, the user will NOT be allowed to join.  We have implemented this minimum to prevent high latency users from adversely affecting the game speed.

In the lobby, the user is shown this text – “Your connection at this time is to slow to properly play Commandos.  Please try again later.”

Then, your stars are averaged (i.e. 2 silver for damage, and 2 silver for time = 1 gold) and then you are awarded the result in gold stars.  Each time you earn 10 stars you are promoted 1 rank. The ranks are as follows:

MULTIPLAYER

Commandos was not designed as a Multiplayer game:
This was the case. The initial design was geared to a Single Player product.  We added the Multiplayer component as a consideration to this growing market.  However, Pyro Studios is located in Madrid, Spain.  There the multiplayer game culture is still growing and the online connections are poor.  This is their first game and they are committed to enhancing and improving the multiplayer game.

Please Note: Since the multi-player feature was added late during Commandos development as a special addition to the game, this is all the information available about the multi-player game of Commandos. Technical support will be unable to answer any questions for you outside of the information provided here.

Although single player can be played with 1024x786 maximum resolution, starting multiplayer game always changes to 640x480 60Hz and it can not be changed. Game uses ports 4321 and 4322.

The game is very crashy and multiplayer protocol is badly designed and it means a lot of crashes and disconnects in multiplayer and it is not possible to re-join without everyone leaving the dedicated server. And since game save is erased from memory if mission is restarted, I have decided not to restart on crashes, but simply re-select character(s) that was previously controlled by the player who crashed and disconnected. This will mean multiple entries as players in the statistics table below, but it is easier to accept this when I think character re-selection screen was designed to show up in these situations mainly to be able to continue long game. So I hope players who crash out are patient in waiting and willing to re-join game as soon as it is possible.

Host/Master: Everytime you see network cable icon to appear to left upper corner press P to pause for a second or two and you usually avoid crashing/disconnecting.
