A4000 FLOPPY CABLE FIX
Many and perhaps most A4000s were shipped
with improperly-wired floppy cables. These cables had wires 3-5
twisted, instead of wires 4-6. These cables will work fine for a single
drive, but will not properly connect a second drive. Also an
improperly-wired or failing floppy cable can cause a high-density drive
to only work with double-density disks. My A4000 was no exception and
it had 3-5 twisted. This guide will tell you how to correct this and
how modify PC floppy cable as Amiga floppy cable.
- small flat screwdriver for opening floppy connector
- screw vice or flat cable clamp
On left improperly-wired A4000 floppy cable and on right PC floppy
that was opened, cut and modified to be properly-wired A4000 floppy
Open floppy connector by pushing a flat screwdriver on both edges of
Peel floppy cable from other egde of the connector to the other edge.
Just like you would roll a rug. Be careful not to pull pins up and out
of the connector.
Cut improperly-wired floppy cable end off.
Cut the plastic with scissors between pins 3 and 4 for about 5cm
Cut the plastic with scissors between pins 6 and 7 for about 5cm
Twist cable pins 4-6 around and install them inside the opened floppy
Press floppy cable connector with screw vice or flat cable clamp until
it is closed and the pin blades have penetrated the wires.
